Shattered Bonds: How Social Fragmentation Breeds Negative Emotions and Undermines Mental Health

Social cohesion and harmony are invaluable bonds that bind human beings, as social creatures, to their societal duties, values, and standards. Social harmony is a hallmark of a civilized society, and its absence leads to the disintegration of that society’s collective vitality. The resulting social fragmentation plunges society into chaos, where negative emotions towards one another and the practical beliefs stemming from these emotions push society onto a path of disorder and immorality. This path breeds various social evils, such as violence, hostility, corruption, deceit, jealousy, discrimination, and more. These evils eventually become integral parts of daily life, causing social fragmentation at multiple levels.

This apparent social distance creates mental distance between different sections and individuals in society, manifesting as negative emotions towards each other. Over time, these societal events transform into mental processes that deeply impact an individual’s mental health. Instead of engaging in positive and progressive activities, individuals find themselves increasingly drawn towards negative and regressive behaviors. This results in a significant devaluation of their morals, values, duties, and conduct, and the sweetness of social relationships begins to sour. Ultimately, their mental state becomes entangled in the grip of negative emotions and stress.

Research indicates that prolonged exposure to social fragmentation and negative emotions can lead to severe mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and even suicidal tendencies. Studies have shown that social isolation and a lack of positive social interactions are strongly correlated with increased levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. For example, a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology found that individuals who experience social isolation are more likely to develop depressive symptoms, highlighting the profound impact of social fragmentation on mental health.

In today’s society, efforts to increase fragmentation are emerging in new ways. In the pursuit of trivial popularity and political gain, certain individuals and groups seek to protect their own interests while pushing others towards social extinction. These self-serving actions often overlook the damage they cause by fostering divisions between people. The media’s involvement in these misguided efforts has solidified feelings of social alienation within the minds of individuals.

Research from the American Psychological Association suggests that the media plays a significant role in shaping societal attitudes and behaviors. When the media perpetuates divisive narratives, it can reinforce negative stereotypes and contribute to social fragmentation. This, in turn, exacerbates feelings of alienation and isolation among individuals, further harming their mental health.

In such a situation, what can one expect? When faced with people from different backgrounds—whether in terms of religion, caste, language, or region—your attitudes, gestures, and behavior are likely to be filled with negativity. In such interactions, you may experience mental instability, stress, and internal conflict. Group-centric efforts, thoughts, and emotions at the societal level can effectively impair individual thinking, emotions, and behavior, leading to a deterioration in mental health.

The link between social fragmentation and mental health is further supported by research conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the WHO, social cohesion is a critical determinant of mental health. When social cohesion breaks down, individuals are more likely to experience stress, anxiety, and depression, underscoring the importance of maintaining social harmony for overall well-being.

Positive harmony and a sense of cooperation between individuals are crucial for both social unity and mental stability. To achieve this, it is essential for society to distance itself from elements and issues that foster social fragmentation. Social ostracism of such individuals, encouraging unity-promoting topics, fostering a positive and harmonious role for the media, focusing on moral socialization in schools, ensuring that policy decisions promote social equality and harmony, and emphasizing value-based upbringing within families are all important steps.

Efforts at the social and familial levels can help develop consistent individual attitudes and behaviors, enabling people to dedicate themselves to progressive activities with a healthy and contented mind.

The cycle of social fragmentation and negative emotions continues to disrupt both group development and individual mental health. By fostering positive social cohesion and addressing the factors that contribute to social fragmentation, we can create an environment where individuals thrive mentally and socially, leading to a healthier and more unified society.
